Sardegna, Sardinia, Sunshine

I think I might be not-so-subconsciously procrastinating over these last posts because as soon as they're done that will be it... and I'm not quite ready for that! I love writing these because I get to go back through my photos, remember everything I did, and then sit down and describe it like I'm reliving it. So let's head back to the beautiful island of Sardegna with my all-time favorite travel companion Domina.

I had just gone to visit her in St. Andrews, Scotland a week before, but the week of separation was definitely felt before I hopped on my first Ryanair flight to sunny Sardegna of the aquamarine seas. Pairing Italian food with an island paradise is maybe the best thing that ever happened, and honestly there aren't many photos from this trip because I spent most of it with my fingers covered in sand, suntan lotion, or marinara sauce. Sometimes the best vacations have the least photos- in one of my favorite movies, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, there's a quote: "Sometimes I don't [take the picture]. If I like a moment, for me, personally, I don't like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it."

I still took like 100 pictures, but for me that's nothing.

My flight to the island landed at noon, in the town of Alghero, and I headed to our little airbnb bed and breakfast UgUFoLo right outside the town center. It was awesome, and our host Alessio was absolutely amazing and made us yummy breakfasts every morning. I had a few hours to kill before Domina arrived so I changed into my suit and stopped at the supermercato for provisions on my way to the nearest beach.

This gorgeous tiny cove was only 4 blocks away from our b&b and I camped out here for hours.

Baguettes on the beach...

Domina trundled into town just after sunset and we set off for the town in search of food. We found a lovely little restaurant in the centro and I ordered a giant pot of mussels. That's it. After dinner we passed out in our cute little parallel twin beds.

The next morning we woke up bright and early, went picnic shopping at the market, and hopped on a bus to the beach. White sand and quite a few topless, bronzed Italians bordered the bluest ocean I've ever seen. Another reason I don't have many photos is that we just laid there. All. Day.

Now the one bad part of this trip- dinner that night. We ended up napping through dinnertime and were at a slight disadvantage dining-choice-wise. Our pick for the night was Hosteria de Pepi Gall. It was the worst food experience of my life and literally the only bad meal I had in a year in Italy. I ordered the ravioli with veggies and bufala mozzarella- it was cold, hard (actually crunchy), filled with some kind of tuna salad mixture, covered in slimy veggies, and surrounded by dollops of mozzarella-flavored foam. FOAM.

I got food poisoning.

Domina got some kind of grain balls with mussels and pulverized shrimp. She described it as "adequate."

After a night of throwing up crunchy ravioli and foam (gross), I was ready for another day horizontal on the beach.

We laid out for a good 6 straight hours. Napping, listening to music, taking dips in the ocean, and polishing off a large bottle of cantaloupe vodka.

Look at that water...

In the afternoon we headed up to the beach club for pina coladas and shade.

As the sun started heading down, we caught a bus back to town, where we showered and then got lost walking around the city in search of the best pizzeria.

We eventually found it, and then carried our precious cargo (and a bottle of Sardinian wine) back down to my favorite little cove for a sunset pizza picnic.

Off in the distance is Capo Caccia, which looks like a giant sea turtle from afar.

It was one of the best dinners I've had.

Dessert was a Nutella pizza and our bottle of vino.

The next morning we woke up to our final Alessio-breakfast: fresh fruit with a mint and lime sauce, homemade yogurt cake, assorted jams, Nutella, toast, fresh juice, and individually frothed cappuccinos. God I miss Alessio...

It was an incredible vacation. Just a long weekend in paradise. Domina came back to Bologna with me afterwards and we explored all of our favorite spots in the second-to-last week of our living abroad. I miss the Italian sun so much and Sardegna was just filled with it. I can't wait to go back.
